UCM Safety Program Overview

The goal of the UCM Safety and Health Program is to provide a safe work environment for all employees, subcontractors and the general public while engaging in work-related activities on the job site. In order to reach such a goal, UCM has a comprehensive safety program in place to help provide the framework for success of this program. On each construction project job site, the site superintendent is accountable to management for the successful achievement of targeted company safety and health goals. Project safety and health goals for United Contractors Midwest, Inc. are as follows:
  • Zero fatalities or serious injuries.
  • Prevention of damage or destruction to company property or equipment.
  • Increased productivity through education of injuries.
  • Reduced worker's compensation costs.
  • Enhanced company's image by working safely.
  • Keep safety a paramount part of the worker's daily activities.
  • Recognize and reward safe work practices.
  • Improve morale and productivity.
The effectiveness of the safety and health program is measured by documenting accidents, injuries, near misses and the other bulleted items as listed above. However, we can only reduce or eliminate the re-occurrence of accidents through education, training and procedural changes. Training our employees is of paramount importance to UCM. In addition to daily on-site tailgate safety sessions, supervisory personnel are required to attend specialized training classes held each winter. UCM has multiple OSHA-authorized 10-Hour and 30-Hour trainers with a combined experience of over 50 years on the Risk Management staff. UCM is proud of its safety achievementover the last decade, which has resulted in more than 15 awards. UCM is also an industry leader in its control and management of claims through a high-deductible loss-sensitive program placing emphasis on hazard recognition and elimination before an incident occurs. UCM is a drug-free workplace and utilizes pre-hire screening for all new hires. Reasonable cause testing is also performed for any incident that occurs to person or equipment. We at UCM are committed to providing the safest work site possible for all parties involved, from beginning to end of every project. Our diversity in scope of work is a formidable challenge for any company with regards to safety, but it is our desire to utilize the talents and technology of our culture to build the road of the future and set the standard industry practice for job site safety.
